How can I display media photo first and show variant image only after variant(color/size)is selected

I want to display stylish media photos on my product page first, to catch customer attention. I don’t want the variant images (such as size or color) to appear right away. I want the variant images to only show once a customer selects a variant. Is there a way to achieve this?
