How can I filter by product color without using variants? Dawn theme

Hey!

I'd love for customers to be able to filter by colour of products on collection pages but only the products with variants show under the filter by colour tab and not single item products. How do I get all of my products to be filtered on there??

I've seen a solution on here that is referring to 2.0 but I'm using Dawn Theme so the steps don't match up for me. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
