How do I add a background image to my header in the Symmetry theme?

Hello.  I am trying to add a background picture to my header in the Symmetry theme.  I have tried several solutions suggested in other posts for other themes but have not been successful.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am a novice in HTML, CSS and Liquid. Thank you. (and my wife will say thanks as well!)
