How to have different thumbnails for same product depending on collection

Hi,

I have looked many places but not found an obvious solution. Would love it if I can do it without editing theme code - maybe with meta fields? I use Impact theme. 

My webshop sells wallpaper. I have many different collections - colours, shop by room, size etc.

But each of the products will belong to several of the collections and products will also have several variants (colours, sizes etc.), and therefore misleading and confusing if the thumbnail shows the product in the wrong colour or setting - for example showing the picture where the mural is installed in a living room, when customer clicked on "bedroom collection".

I guess a lot of webshops have this issue and have a solution for it?

I am not really confident about your requirement but I am giving you a reference clothing site which I worked on which shows images only for the variants selected and hides other products
