How to make product cover remain also product first image (instead of first variant image)

Hi I am using Dawn theme, 

Whenever I create new product that has variant when you click on that product first photo on the product page = photo of first variant.

Is there a way to avoid this and don't make first variant photo appear at all until someone clicks and choose variants from dropdown menu?

I would like for my cover photo to stay the first product photo, not for variant photo to automatically switch.

You can either:

1. Change the first variant to a different one.
2. Assign the image you want to display to the first variant.

...agreed. Literally no help at all. Having the same issue with a different theme. I think it has something to do with the amount of inventory but can't figure out how to keep the cover image static. Why give the option to have a cover image if it's going to constantly change based on how much inventory you have in stock???
