On the product page the thumbnails are small.

I was able to increase their size via code but it made the quality of the images very poor.

How can I maintain the quality of the thumbnails while keeping a high quality?

I noticed that your original image is very small. Resizing images in PNG or JPG formats will definitely lead to quality loss. Here are solutions for your issue:
