Multiple images created by image_picker?

When uploading an image in the customizer uusing image picker, is it correct that Shopify automatically creates multiple images with width variations for responsive use?

Using the Dawn theme, I added an image to a image-with-text section - 'catupleftwide.png'

The source code output on my site looks like:

If I'm correct, how many width variations are created? Is there any way to control/modify this?
