So confused - Dawn Theme Image Sizes

Hi team,

I know this must be a really basic question but I am SO confused about image sizes and dimensions.

To keep my query streamlined, I want to talk about the Collection Image. Which (I am hoping I am correctly referring to) as the one below:

What dimensions / ratio should I be using for this image please?

Originally I had assumed a square, and Google suggests either 550x550 or 800x800 depending where you look, either way, a square. This makes sense because then on my home screen where I have my collection images - they look like this:

Now the problem is when I then try and look at having the collection image displaying on the collection page itself, this happens:

The collection image here is obviously using different dimensions/ratio and so it's cropped. It's obviously not a square as suggested in all the sources online. As such, for it to look normal here - what dimensions should I use please?

I then am assuming that I need to fiddle with the image, to make sure that the category title (in this case 'soft and fuzzy') is centralised in the image so that when it's inevitable cropped into a square for the Home Page's Collection List.

On my other website (using the old Debut theme) I was able to get around this somewhat by imply putting a banner style image into the Collection Description, and it would display OK (check out www.yoyovillage.co.uk to see what I mean, on the home page there's some collections with square images, and then if you goto the collection in question, the banner is completely different).

However this doesn't seem to work with Dawn - as no matter what dimensions I choose for my image in the Collection Description, I can't get it to extend across the whole area (example of a test image below)

If anyone is able to help or advise, I would greatly appreciate it - I am tearing my hair out.
