To adjust empty search and empty cart page content to middle

Does anyone know how i can adjust the content of an empty search page and empty cart page to the middle automatically without adjusting the padding, because when i adjust the padding, it tends to look odd in different devices especially when tilting the ipad or mobile. i want the content to always stay in the middle even after tilting.

see images below for the problem. Adjusting the padding doesnt seem to work on all devices.
