What's a good way to add a dropdown menu to image block categories?

Is there a way to make dropdown subcategories appear on the main category images for:

AtSportsandNetting.com?

We want the customer to see the categories by clicking one of the blocks. It works the same way as the text images above but we also want the category images below. 

The first block image is called: Shop Baseball 

How can we add a dropdown to this?

To have dropdown subcategories appear on your main category image, you'll need to link the main category to its subcategories using a metafield.

After setting up the metafield, you’ll need to customize your section or create a new one from scratch. This will involve coding to pull subcategories from the metafields and display them in a dropdown.
