when my inventory is limited, what do I do so people do not add more than available stock

So when I have limited stock, customers can still add as much quantity as they want and keep getting this annoying message : You can't add more xxx to the cart. 
I just want that the + in the quantity greys when they cannot add more than stock available

I understand that you would prefer having the add quantity button grayed out once the item is sold out, instead of receiving the cart error. This would be ideal as customers will be able to determine the maximum amount of inventory to purchase. Although, this feature requires code to be inserted into your theme. I recommend speaking with Shopify Experts. Alternatively. you can look to include a similar feature that will show the remaining inventory of a variant on product pagesThis will let you add a message on the product page that shows the number of items you have in stock when inventory runs low on a product variant. In addition, If you use a free theme from Shopify, then you might be able to contact Shopify Support for help with this tutorial.

Another suggestion would be to browse our Shopify App Store to see if you can find an app that suits your needs. There are a number of apps that show inventory quantity and provide automated inventory updates to your customers. Although this may not have the exact solution you are looking for, they may be great alternatives. For instance, the Quantify App allows you to set minimum and maximum quantities for your products so that you can control what you sell. If you have any questions about the apps, or need a hand setting them up, feel free to reach out to the developers directly as they could provide some more information.
