Why can't I edit my product page theme on Shopify?

I am unable to edit the product page theme or create a new product theme in my Shopify store. I've now removed the Shogun app in case that was interfering but it hasn't made a difference. Is anyone able to help diagnose this issue?

I have checked your post. You need to assign product template by going to back-end of the product. Right now there is not any single product assigned to the default product template. You may check image which i have uploaded here.  You needs to select default template on list of drop-dwon.

Thanks Devendra,

 

I have assigned a product to the default theme and it still doesn't allow me to edit the Default theme or create a new product theme (or even select either option)

Hello @BV6 ,

 

In this case, you may need assign default product to your theme. You can try to follow these steps:

  • Go to Online Store -> Themes -> Customize -> Sections
  • Find the product template setting: Within the sections or theme settings, there should be an option related to product templates or product pages. It may be labeled as "Product Pages", "Product Layout", or something similar. Click on that option.
  • Select the default product template: In the product template settings, you should see a list of available templates. Choose the default product template you want to assign to your store. If you are using a third-party or custom template, it should be listed there.
  • Save the changes

Hi Ali

When going to Theme > Online store > Customize > Sections, I am able to click on and edit all other options  (collections, collections list, blog, etc), however, when I select Product, the options underneath (Default Theme, Pre-order, Create a template) are all greyed out and don't allow me to select any of the options.

Hi BVG,

 

Something to try: If you are following the steps listed by others with multiple browser tabs open (i.e., Saving the Product Theme settings on one tab, and then trying to edit the default Product Page theme on a different tab), make sure to refresh the second tab. 

I found your question as I was having the same problem. I work using multiple browser tabs open and here's what I did:
1. Follow what others have said: In Products, assign a product to the Default theme: Theme template > Default-product
2. Save 
3. Go to the browser tab where you want to edit your Default-product theme. 
4. Refresh this browser.
5. You should now be able to click on and edit the Default-product theme.

This was the problem I was having. I hope this helps.

You likely have yet to assign your products to the Online Sales channel, or you have not added any products. Essentially, your Shopify theme sees no products for the online store to assign templates to.
