I am attempting to finish the setup guidelines, going step by step on everything that has been asked so far.
When setting up Shopify Payments, the system drops a popup saying I need to setup 2FA for security reasons. I agree, it is always a great idea to use it. So I set it up. At first, I setup 2FA with an authenticator app. Then, when I go back to finish setup of the bank account, it kept asking me for the 2fa code, every single time I tried to setup Shopify Payments. It just won't let me through.
I came here, and on another thread, someone with similar issue said they were able to "fix it" by changing the 2FA method to sms. So I try it.
Now? This damn thing won't even send me the sms. I cannot remove 2FA, I don't receive any sms with codes anymore and due to this I cannot finish the setup.
At least the account is secure. If I cannot confirm my 2FA authentication myself, who can?! Someone please help this make sense.
Things I've done:
- Turned off ad-blocker browser extension.
- Cleared cache, cookies, all site data, local storage, session storage, indexeddb, buckets, shared storage, etc. the whole nine yards. All gone. More than once. Still get the same issue.
- Open Shopify site using incognito browser window, login ok, but the rest of the issue still persists, setting up bank info shopify asks for 2FA setup that is already done, and keeps asking me after I answer it.
- Switched from authenticator app 2FA to SMS 2FA - issues changed but bottom line remains, after authenticating 2FA does not persist and the system is making me re-auth everytime as if I never did it.
- In the case of SMS, it seems Shopify uses an sms provider that might limit sending messages to the same number in a short period of time? Not sure - It is no longer sending me any sms after the first few, yesterday. I left it alone for more than 8hrs now, and tried again, but still nothing. SMS 2FA is broken for me now.
- I have 2FA backup codes with the authenticator app setup and I've used one of those already, but those are finite. I guess I cannot keep using those, especially if it won't persist for some god forsaken reason.

Have you tried restarting your phone and see if you will be able to receive the authentication SMS and reach out to your sim provider to check any restrictions regarding your phone number? If so and the issue still persists, I highly suggest that you reach out to Shopify support team as this is an account issue. They will be able to further check your account and guide you on what to do. You can reach out to them by going through their Shopify Help Center and enter your concern on AI chat box, respond to it until the "I still need help" or "chat with a support advisor" option appear.
Yes Im facing the exact issue as well. Please let me know if you find a solution for it
We are having the exact same issue. We just go around and around. Tried incognito, different devices etc etc, if you work out how to fix it please let me know
Here, for example.
Shopify continues to ask me to setup 2FA, but I already did this. That said, when I continue to attempt to complete the onboarding process, I keep getting asked to complete setup of 2FA; notwithstanding the fact that this has already been done; multiple times now.
I'm stuck in a loop. Onboarding incomplete with no path to completion because the system is taking me to 2FA jail and my sentence is nowhere to be found so I am here forever setting up 2FA until Shopify gods are appeased.
Thank you for the suggestion @SealSubs-Roan ! Restarting my phone had zero effect on the fact that Shopify keeps asking me to setup 2FA... no matter what I do.
I sorted mine out by talking to Shopify Support live chat. He Resync'd my ID or something and then told me to log in again and it worked!
