Re: Another Merchant Center MPN Question

Another Merchant Center MPN Question

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did use the search function.

On a backend product page, if you enter a value in the SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) field, should this sync to the MPN data field in Google Merchant Center using the Google & YouTube App? Or am I chasing something that doesn't exist and wasting my time?

Thanks for the help.

Steven

If the SKU value you entered, is in fact the MPN, yes you can sync it. However Do not use your own SKU value as the MPN.

SKU and MPN are two different values.

SKU = stock keeping unit (assigned by a seller)

MPN = Manufacturer Part Number (only assigned by the manufacturer, not seller)

Also here are the rules:

1) If a manufacturer has assigned a barcode then you are required to add this info in the GTIN field. Alongside the brand value with identifier exists to yes.

2) If the manufacturer has not assigned a barcode, then remove the values brand, mpn and gtin and set identifier exists to no.

Here is a guide how to apply the rules using feed rules: https://support.google.com/google-ads/community-video/216954171

Hi emannauel.

I have thousands of products and variants. Do you know if there is a way to auto copy the Sku in to the mpn attribute in shopify? I need to do this as the mpn in my Stamped io review feed is actually my sku. Any help would be much appreciated.

I did look at a merchant center feed rule that was mpn set to id which works but the ID is not sku and the sku doesn't appear in the options.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

To add the SKU value to the MPN attribute, I recommend you use: https://apps.shopify.com/multiple-google-shopping-feeds

@EmmanuelFlossie Thanks for the information. We are looking at a similar situation. We do not have GTIN nor MPN. But we sell branded products that are unique. In this regard i have the following questions:

  1. Would it make sense to use the SKU as the Google:MPN value, given that the combination of the brand and SKU should be a unique identifier? (Our aim is to have ratings shown on google display, and according to the gTech team this could solve the issue - see email from gTech bellow: "If you don't have GTIN and MPN values, I would recommend you to please provide other product identifiers such as Brand+SKU in the Ratings feed and please make sure that the same identifiers should be present in the Shopping Ads feed for better matching. ")
  2. I use your recommended app "Multiple-google-shopping-feeds", can you tell me how to add the SKU value to the MPN attribute?

Thanks 🙂

If the SKU, is the MPN value assigned by the manufacturer, yes. If no, then no, don't use the SKU.

To show ratings, you can map the data using item_group_id values.

Simply go to the app settings, and under identifiers type 'sku'

You said "Simply go to the app settings, and under identifiers type 'sku'"

Please can you send a link or a screen shot of where this "identifiers"
setting is on shopify.

Kind regards James

Please note that the app has a dedicated support team that you can talk to. This is not my app 🙂

According tp the gTech team i can use the SKU in the MPN value.

  • In your opinion, what can be a negative consequence of doing so?
  • Also, if doing so, should i set up in the "identifier do not exists” in merchant center?

ofcourse gTech will say it's ok, but they don't know what you actually mean. Google support only answers based on your question. They will not tell you, the conditional factors.

For example if the SKU attribute value, is no a real MPN, no, you can not use it. SKU and MPN are two different things.

My recommendation is to follow this video that explains a bit more:

Thanks again for the time dedicated to my questions.

Can you elaborate what a possible negative consequences might be if i provide my SKU as the MPN value?

(and to provide you with some background information - we are looking at this because we would like our product ratings to appear on google and for that, according to gTech, we need some unique identifiers i.e. MPN. We do not have GTIN, hence using MPN)

You will have either a product disapproval or limited performance.

If the manufacturer has assigned an MPN, yes you can use this + brand. But only if it's from the manufacturer. Not an SKU which is a stock keeping unit value assigned by the reseller, which is completely different.
