I signed us up for the Shopify tax app and it's just not working for me.

Is there a sales tax app that 1 has all the correct rates and 2 isn't a huge pain in the arse to sort out?

Hi @suzanneharte I'm sorry to hear Shopify Tax isn't working for your shop. If you share more details, happy to help and or connect you with other solutions.

When I report taxable sales to the state I make 1 entry for all the sales at our brick and mortar. The state then breaks that down into their share and what comes back to the county and cities. Shopify, however, breaks out the tax due in each region, but that means the taxable sales amount is duplicated, showing that the taxable sales are several times larger than the actual taxable sales. The attachment is the Shopify tax report showing how $8k is duplicated, so it looks like we had $32k in taxable sales. For the life of my I can't sort out how to convert these numbers into something useful. What I want is the sales reported in the region where they took place, not broken out into this mess. And it really annoys me that you charge us to use this app. The only reason we use this app is that Shopify doesn't let us produce reports with the customer's full shipping address, which is super messed up.

Hi Suzanne,

Sorry you're having trouble with Shopify's tax reporting.

Our Report Toaster app can help. We help a lot of merchants (many in CA) run reports for filing their sales tax. Please feel free to take a look and reach out to support with any help you might need.

Thanks for sharing @suzanneharte. I apologize for the confusion on the report. To your point, the rows are not designed to be "summed" together.

The way the US Sales Tax report was designed is to show you exactly what you should report to each jurisdiction (or on each line of your tax return which corresponds to the tax jurisdiction code).

The only summation that would hold true is "tax due". The remaining columns help you understand the math of the jurisdictional breakdown needed for the schedule on your return.

The state's site requires the sales amount, not the tax amount, and like I said, the state does the breakdown themselves, so no, the way Shopify reports the taxes due is not useful to me.

And not for nothing, but the tax rate Shopify's "experts" has assigned to our address is wrong, so I'm not confident that any of this is working the way you tell me it is.
