Hi,

I am currently using a newsletter subscription to offer a discount code for the first order. I am wondering whether there is a way to apply a discount code automatically and simultaneously have the customer join the newsletter instead of them having to register, wait for the email and use the discount at checkout.

There is not feature like this under the Shopify platform yet though, as a workaround, you can use application to achieve this such as Seal Subscriptions and Automatic Discounts apps and see what works best for you.

While, in theory, it makes sense to automatically apply the discount code when someone signs up for your newsletter, doing so actually has a major flaw that could lose you significant money:

If you automatically apply the discount code without new customers having to confirm their subscription first, then people can exploit this by entering fake emails, and will get rewarded with a discount on your products, despite not actually being in your mailing list.

A foolproof way involves two steps:

1. Use an email marketing app that allows you to add a specific tag to your customer accounts once they have confirmed their subscription to your newsletter.
