Best beginner-friendly tutorials on custom app development (storing data in metafields)? Skills?

Hi. 

I plan to store additional information about customers upon registration (in meta fields). A custom app is required for that however. 

I have programming experience (not with Shopify however). I'm a bit overwhelmed bit the huge documentation and can't seem to find any decent tutorials teaching the basics about customs apps.
How long do you think it will take me to get to know the basics and subsequentely implement the desired functionality from above?

Any suggestions for good tutorials that teach Shopify custom app development?
