Buy X Get Y Not Working With Subscription Product

I am trying to run a simple Buy X Get Y type of discount code with Shopify's Discount Code feature.

So, buy one of our subscription products and get a free product. 

The Buy X Get Y type of discount code is throwing this error when applying the code in the checkout:
discount code isn't valid for the items in your cart.

I tried using a normal product as the Buy X product instead of one of the Subscription products and the discount code worked fine.

That helps me narrow it down to the fact that is may just be the type of Buy X product I am using. 

What could be the issue with using a Subscription based product versus a regular product with the discount code?

I saw this exact question was asked about a year ago but got no response so I am reposting hoping for an answer.
