Can I switch URL and hosting from Squarespace to Shopify?

1 0 0

Last year, as I was developing a new product, I bought a URL and hosting from Squarespace, but never created a website. Now I am ready to create a website, but I've learned that Shopify will be better for my needs. So my question is: can I move the URL and hosting from Squarespace to Shopify? And if so, how? Thanks.

@Ringaard  hey, thanks for posting here.

Yes, you can move your URL (domain name) from Squarespace to Shopify. The process involves transferring your domain from Squarespace to Shopify. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Prepare Your Domain for Transfer

  1. Unlock Your Domain:

    • Log in to your Squarespace account.
    • Go to the Home Menu, click on Settings, then Domains.
    • Click on the domain you want to transfer.
    • Scroll down to the Domain Lock section and toggle it off.
  2. Get the Authorization Code (EPP Code):

    • In the same domain settings, scroll down to the Transfer Out section.
    • Click Send Transfer Authentication Code. This code will be sent to your email.

Step 2: Initiate the Transfer to Shopify

  1. Log in to Shopify:

    • Go to your Shopify admin panel.
  2. Go to Domains:

    • From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
  3. Transfer Domain:

    • Click on Transfer domain.
    • Enter the domain you want to transfer and click Next.
    • Enter the authorization code you received from Squarespace and click Next.
  4. Confirm Transfer:

    • Review the information and confirm the domain transfer. The transfer process may take up to 7 days to complete.

Step 3: Configure Your Domain in Shopify

  1. Set Your Domain as Primary:

    • Once the transfer is complete, go to Settings > Domains in Shopify.
    • Set your transferred domain as the primary domain if you want it to be the main address for your store.
  2. Update DNS Settings (if necessary):

    • Shopify should automatically configure the DNS settings for your domain, but if needed, you can manually update the DNS settings to point to Shopify's servers.

Step 4: Cancel Hosting with Squarespace

  1. Cancel Subscription:
    • After the transfer is complete, log in to your Squarespace account and go to Billing & Account settings.
    • Cancel any hosting subscriptions related to the domain to avoid being charged for services you no longer need.

Additional Tips

  • Check Transfer Restrictions: Ensure that your domain is not locked or within the 60-day transfer lock period imposed by ICANN for newly registered or recently transferred domains.
  • Backup Content: If you had any content on Squarespace, make sure to back it up before canceling the subscription.

By following these steps, you should be able to move your domain from Squarespace to Shopify without much hassle. If you encounter any issues, both Squarespace and Shopify have support teams that can assist you with the transfer process.

, thanks.

Hi @Ringaard,

I'm Kate from PageFly - Shopify Landing Page Builder.

You can move your URL, wherever you created it - to your Shopify store. To do so, simply set up the primary domain on your Shopify store as follows:

Step 1: Create and login to Shopify store

Step 2: Go to “Settings”

Step 3: Go to “Domains”

Here’s how you can transfer your domain:

  • Click “Connect existing domain” > “Transfer it to Shopify”

  • Enter the domain URL > Next
  • Check the “Prepare domain for transfer” part: Unlock your domain so that it's eligible for transfer from Spacesquare

  • Enter the authorization code from Soacesquare > Start Transfer

*Transfer may take up to 7-10 days to complete.

Step 4: Set your domain as “Primary

From “Domains” screen, choose the domain URL has been transferred > Click on the domain and Change “Domain type” to “Primary domain

Hope this helps you out, and wish you a successful online business ahead!
