All things Shopify and commerce
Hello. We are planning to build an online store/platform for a gym. The question is:
Is it possible to use a QR- code at the entry somehow to identify the user and check if the memberships etc are payed?
JessicaTF
Hello @JessicaTF , You may be able to do this by using the Shopify API's. But it will require an expert Shopify developer to integrate this custom solution for you.

Thanks for the reply! Is there gyms that are using shopify and some access controlling system already know to be used with Shopify?
I don't know about any gym store. But the requested thing could be achieved by using Shopify in my opinion.
What we'll gone do is, first offer the members to subscribe and then we will check either the person has active subscription or not.

Hello JessicaTF,
Yes, it's absolutely possible to use QR codes to manage access to your gym! You can set up a system where each user's membership details (including payment status) are linked to a unique QR code.
Here's a simple overview of how such a system might work:
Customer Management: As a part of customer registration, the user signs up for a membership on your Shopify platform.
QR Code Generation: Post successful registration and payment, a unique QR code is generated for each user. These QR codes can be linked to the customer's account details.
QR Code Distribution: The QR code is then emailed to the customer or can be accessed via their account on your platform.
QR Code Scanning: At the gym entrance, a QR code scanner (which can be a specialized device or just a smartphone with the right app) scans the customer's QR code.
User Verification: Upon scanning, the system checks the user's membership details, including whether their membership is active and whether their payments are up-to-date.
Access Grant/Denial: Based on this verification, access is granted or denied to the gym.
Keep in mind, while Shopify is excellent for managing your online store and memberships, you might need some additional software or application to handle real-time QR code scanning and verification at the gym entrance.
You may need to engage a developer for a custom solution or utilize third-party apps or services that integrate with Shopify to manage this process. Shopify's API is quite robust and flexible, so there are numerous possibilities for creating this type of system.
Remember to ensure the system adheres to data protection regulations in your region when implementing it, especially considering that personal data is linked to the QR codes.
Hope this helps and good luck with your gym!
Best,
Will

As everyone agreed, it is possible and I wanted to add - very smart. On top of knowing if the member has paid, you will also be able to gather data such as how many times a week they exercise and tailor, for example, your future email marketing campaigns.
Research the best QR code generator reviews and keep in mind the integrations available. For example, you can use Zapier to connect Beaconstac with Shopify and Google Sheets and create an amazing customer database. Needless to say how useful this will be for your online store once you start it.
My point is - with QR codes, you can do so much more than check if the membership was paid. You can also offer a discount if they scan it on your website when you're running a promotion - this builds loyalty.
Did you ever find a solution for this? I need something like this to track member admissions to our small nonprofit science center. I’d love to hear how this turned out.
Hi, @discoverytina!
Thanks for joining this thread.
The Socket 2D Barcode scanner here scans QR codes, and it can be used for scanning memberships or entry. You would need to download an app or a custom solution to generate the QR codes for this.
The app talks to the admin to generate and set up specific QR codes for your business needs. We have a host of apps here in the app store which might work for this. For any questions about setting these up or integration, I'd recommend reaching out to the app developers themselves for more clarity on the process!
