All things Shopify and commerce
Hello!
Is there currently any way to create collections with metafields as the condition? We use metafields all across our website to show specific product specifications and would love to use that to organize our products in specific collections as well as it would be a nice time saver 🙂
Use case?
We already use metafields for product uploads, so that we can instantly display the product specifications on the product page as well as other places. Having collections set up to match these conditions we would be able to automate that process of sorting collections.
Would be nice to have this feature! Would love to know if it was possible.
Unfortunately Shopify does not have the option.
Hey @Slemming
Even though this feature is not currently available in Shopify out of the box, I can recommend checking out the Arigato Automation app that can help with this. With this app, you can automatically add products to collections based on a metafield value.
To quickly get started on this, you can download the following sample workflow from our automation library: Add Product To Collection Based On Metafield in Shopify by Using Arigato Automation.
Feel free to contact our team if you need a hand with the configuration. 🙂
I am looking to add this same functionality. We are trying to avoid using tags, to avoid duplicate content in our website, and since the Metafields will already be set, it would nice to be able to automate our category creation based on that. I am curious if you ever found a solution to this?
I am thinking of trying Arigato Automation, but we may end up on a plan where we will have Shopify Flow, and I am curious if Shopify Flow would do the same thing?
I also wondered if there might be some faceted searching apps, that would be able to create smart collections based on metafields, since there is a good chance we might need to add a more complex search system.
Yo... for reals though...
Metafield values as conditions for Collections seems like such a natural step in the evolution of Shopify's metafield system.
I've always avoided Shopify for managing large / complex catalogs for missing features like this. Magento has been my go-to...
If Shopify could enable Collections build from Metafield data... I don't think I'd have a reason to use any other platform.
As much as I wish this was handled natively by Shopify, the only solution I have is to double tag and edit metafield.
However I have found an app that manages to automate it for me, I use a task script runner called Mechanic and this script:

Cheers, hopefully Shopify makes this easier for us
Has anything changed on this? It would really help me as well. Super disappointed its not an option. Seems like a no-brainer, but its not like I know programming, so maybe I’m just missing something.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed. 😞 We are pretty much populating the same info in tags and metafields, so that we can get all of the functionality to work. It seems crazy to have to add so much redundant data to our item records.
So disappointing. Hopefully things will change soon. Seems like things are going that direction, though, so nothing to do but wait and see. Thanks for the update!
Struggling with the same problem in my shop. Moved to Metafields and now it is not possible to create a collection based on a metafield. Basic functionality is missing here. We need this Shopify!
I was just informed that this functionality was added!!! 🙂 You have to go into each of the metafields, and enable them to be used for collections, but after that, they will show up in the list! The only bummer is that the only option you have in the dropdown when setting up the automated collection, is "is equal to". It is unfortunate that there aren't options like, "is empty", "is not empty", or "is in" (to let you pick multiple values). We will find a workaround for those things though.
