Cart token not getting updated for new carts

I am using shopify's cart.js API to create a cart. It returns a token in response which is supposed to be unique whenever new cart is created. I am facing an issue where this API is returning same token for two different carts. I created a cart and placed an order when i create another cart, cart.js is returning the same token as previous cart. The creation date of two carts doesn't seem to matter, it is returning same token for carts created 2 months apart. Can someone help resolve this issue?
