Changing a custom page template also changes the DEFAULT page template

I trying to create a custom page that has a form on it. Only the form, not the default header and default footer. So I created a new page template based on DEFAULT page.

Admin Panel -> Online Store -> Themes -> Customize -> Pages -> Create Temple

Named it, Based on DEFAULT

Then I change to the new page template. It shows all the sections of default. Header, page, footer, etc.

I HIDE the header and hide the footer, click SAVE

The sections  are now hidden. I exit the theme editor.

Now back shopify admin I click on pages and create a new page, and select the new template. Preview

It looks EXACTLY like I want it.

But, when I check another page that uses the default template, it ALSO has the sections hidden. Doublechecked that it was on default theme and not the new custom.

Go back into theme editor. The default page now has the same sections hidden! So I unhide the sections, click save and change to the new custom page template. the sections are again visible. I hide them again. click save. Switch to default, and they are ALSO hidden!

Its a new page template. So why are the two linked? I thought the whole point of creating new page templates was to allow them to be similar, but able to be customized in ways that you don't want applied across the entire store/site.

I'm using the theme Sense.

What do you mean create a different template from the theme?

I thought that's what I did. I clicked "create new template" and named it 'download' and when it asked what it was based on I chose "Default." Shouldn't that mean it's a new template? I didn't create a page, but a new template inside the theme editor.

Then I created a new page and assigned it to the download template. Added the content and only AFTER that did I try to go back to the theme editor and turn off the header and footer visibility. Exited, then view the page. Looks like I want it. But..... Then I go to the home page and it's ALSO missing the header and footer. Checked that the home page was using the default template and NOT the download template.

So I go back into the theme editor and the default has the header and footer hidden. I unhide them. Save the changes. Then open the download template. And they are unhidden. So I hide them. Save. Switch to default. And they are hidden there ALSO. So I unhide. Save. And stop and post here.

What I need to do is figure out how to create a new template that ISN'T linked to the default so edits don't roll over.

@Mpiper
Basically when we create a new template from Customizer that means a new page and the bottom dropdown is the real templates that is working from the theme file.

I hope you understand, if not so please send me back.
thanks
