Common question, Getting decent add to carts but very low purchases

I know this is a common question, but to me it seems like a hard one to narrow down.  I feel like I'm doing all the "right" things, making sure checkout experience is simple and quick, decent product descriptions, testimonials and reviews on every page, been slowly updating images.

There must me something I'm missing or something simple I haven't thought of. I know newish shops take time especially in my niche market www.heavyhanded.com so I'm just trying to see if there's something I'm missing.

Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @GRivI'm Tracy from BON Loyalty, the top-rated Shopify loyalty app.

First of all, I understand that you’ve put a lot of work into your store and product. You’ve got a very niche offering—a specialized hand cream for gym-goers, designed to keep their hands healthy and smooth even after intense workouts. The fact that you’re aware of your audience’s specific needs and have already gathered plenty of reviews means you’re on the right track. Now it’s time to refine a few areas and leverage more diverse forms of social proof, broaden your content strategy, and maybe look into influencer partnerships.

1/ Incorporate more authentic user-generated content:

While having written reviews is fantastic, you’re missing a crucial element that can significantly increase conversion rates: visual and video testimonials. Consider encouraging customers to share short video clips or before-and-after images of their hands after using your cream. Even a quick, honest selfie video from a satisfied customer can carry a lot of weight. It helps potential buyers see the genuine impact of the product, making your brand feel trustworthy and relatable.

2/ Collaborate with bodybuilder KOLs:
Given your niche, finding fitness influencers or recognized bodybuilders to promote your product can be a game-changer. Their audiences trust their recommendations and are often looking for specialized solutions. Offering a free sample to a respected figure in the bodybuilding community can lead to an authentic shout-out, a demo video, or even a long-term partnership. Seeing someone well-known in the fitness world use and endorse your product will reassure potential customers that it’s worth trying.

3/ Build a blog for SEO and educational value:

Another key step is to invest in content marketing. Start a blog on your website and publish articles about hand care for athletes, tips for preventing calluses and blisters, advice on improving grip strength, and interviews with trainers or physical therapists. This not only helps improve your website’s SEO, making it easier for potential customers to find you, but it also establishes your store as a reliable source of information. Over time, these blog posts will draw in more organic traffic and help you reach people who didn’t even realize they needed your product.

4/ Expand or optimize your product line-up:
With just two products, it can be challenging for customers to fully appreciate your niche or discover your brand through broader search terms. If possible, consider adding complementary items: perhaps a travel-size version of the cream, a balm specifically formulated for post-workout skin relief, or related accessories like specialized grips or gloves. Having a slightly larger product range can improve your chances of being found and make your store feel more comprehensive, without losing its niche appeal.

I know you’ve already done a lot, and it might feel overwhelming to adjust your strategy further. However, these additional steps can help push your brand to the next level. Remember, success in a niche market often comes from steady, thoughtful improvements rather than one big breakthrough. Keep refining your approach, stay in tune with your audience’s needs, and you’ll see the results over time.

First of all, I went over your website and i think the categories, product images and designs of your website is elaborate, so I think you can focus more upgrade on marketing strategies. Based on our expertise one area we would recommend you to explore further is retargeting, which can be crucial for recovering abandoned carts. A lot of potential buyers may hesitate at the last moment due to various reasons. Launching retargeting ads can help remind these visitors of their interest in your products and encourage them to return and complete their purchase. Our app, Ako marketing app can help by enabling personalized follow-up messages and targeted ads that keep your brand top-of-mind. For how it works and the ideas behind, welcome to take a look over my recent blog: Why Retargeting Is the Key to Recovering Abandoned Carts.

Additionally, you can consider enhancing customer engagement through live chat or chatbots on your site, this can provide immediate assistance and answer any questions that might be preventing a purchase. Hello @GRiv,

There are a few additional strategies you can consider to optimize your Shopify store further and help boost conversions:

  1. Clear Value Proposition: Make sure your unique selling points are front and center. What makes your brand stand out? Whether it's your products, quality, or your niche focus, this message should be easily visible on your homepage or product pages.

  2. Email Capture and Nurture: Offer an incentive (like a discount or freebie) for customers to join your email list. Use this to build an email marketing campaign that nurtures leads with helpful content, promotions, and product launches.

  3. Targeted Traffic: While you're focusing on your website's design and experience, don't forget about attracting the right visitors. Invest in targeted ads (Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram) to bring in traffic from your niche market. Use social media to build relationships and engage directly with your community.

  4. SEO Optimization: Ensure that your product pages, blog posts, and overall content are SEO-optimized for the keywords your target audience is searching for. Use tools like Google Search Console and Ahrefs to identify SEO opportunities.

  5. Engagement on Social Media: Beyond just posting products, engage your audience by sharing user-generated content, behind-the-scenes looks, and community involvement. Authentic engagement can drive more traffic and interest in your brand.

  6. Abandoned Cart Recovery: Set up abandoned cart recovery emails if you haven't already. This simple feature can significantly recover lost sales by reminding customers about the items they left behind.

  7. Upselling and Cross-Selling: Utilize apps like iCart or other upsell/cross-sell tools to recommend relevant products when customers are about to checkout. Offering complementary items or bundle deals can increase the average order value.

  8. Customer Experience (CX): Focus on smooth site navigation and an intuitive design. Test your store's performance regularly and make sure it’s optimized for mobile, since many users shop via mobile.

  9. Social Proof: Display real-time activity (e.g., recent orders or number of people browsing your site). This can create a sense of urgency and trust with potential buyers.

  10. Leverage Analytics: Use Google Analytics or Shopify's native analytics to track where your customers are coming from, what they interact with, and where they drop off in the buying process. This will help pinpoint areas for improvement.
