Continue Selling when Out of Stock: alert when a customer tries to order a qty > qty available

Hi there:

We currently allow customers to continue purchasing items when inventory is out of stock, so they will get a "backorder" option if they order something with an inventory quantity of 0. The problem we're facing is where we have, say 20 units in stock and a customer orders 40 - currently nothing notifies the customer that they are ordering a quantity > what's available. 

Does anyone know a way to address this? Either through an alert when the quantity exceeds what's available or in the cart somewhere?

This automates the "Continue selling while out of Stock" and provides the ability to let the customer know they cannot order a certain amount (due to your inventory input of that specific product).
