Create custom selection of options for clients (not variant related)

I need to create an option for clients to choose between three schools (we only sell to these three schools). 

So, the client must be able to choose which school they are at. 

This must preferably be a one time thing so at the cart and checkout. Otherwise in the product section. 

I have tried with custom field to no avail..

I suggest exploring the Easify Product Options app, free plan available. This app allows you to easily add school options onto your product pages, utilizing appropriate option display types like Dropdowns, Radio Buttons, Buttons... 🤗
