My store is a one product store and currently shows the prices is US dollars ($) 

I also want to target the UK market - so my question is, if someone visits the store from the UK, how do i amend the price to £39.99 and have the compare price amended also to still reflect a 50% discount.

I don't need or want any fancy currency converting apps.

If you are using Shopify Payments, then you can use international pricing. International pricing will allow you to set region-specific pricing so you can ensure you're selling your items at the correct price based on your customers' location. You'll also have access to allowing your customer to pay in their local currency while still getting paid in USD. More information on international pricing can be found here and information on selling and getting paid in different currencies can be found here. 

If you are not using Shopify Payments then you would be limited to selling in USD at checkout and would require using a currency conversion app to showcase UK pricing.

Hello, does not allow you to convert the payment instrument from HUF to USD

Shopify Payments will not convert funds to HUF as Shopify Payments does not support HUF. You can view a full list of supported currencies for Shopify Payments here. You can; however, sell in HUF, but it will require that you use a supported payment provider for Hungary. You can view a full list of supported payment providers for Hungary here.
