Hello, I have a requirement to collect customer gender and date of birth on checkout... any idea how I can achieve this? Secondly, I would like to disable add to cart functionality when specific product is in cart. how can I enable this scenario? Thanks.

Hi @Y_N ,

Thanks for reaching out. That is a great question.

Currently, Shopify does not provide a way for store owners to edit their checkout pages unless on the Shopify Plus plan. If you allow people to check out as guests, they can bypass the account signup form and, in turn, the Date of Birth and Gender field.

The way around this would be either:

  1. You add the Gender and DOB fields to the cart page, prompt users to go to the cart page before checkout, and make both fields mandatory. You can follow this guide on how to add attributes to the cart page to collect more information. This is an advanced tutorial and is not supported by Shopify. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Liquid is required. If you are not familiar with coding, it is best to get in touch with Shopify Experts that you can hire for this task.

  2. You require a user to create an account to checkout, with the DOB and Gender field mandatory in the account creation process. Here is a guide on how to make customers' accounts and fields mandatory.

As for your second question, I am unsure how this scenario should play out. Can you share more details or an example so I can suggest the best option in this case? Thanks!

Hi Iris

We are experiencing the same problem as our account is also on a basic plan and given we are a small family business that does not always capture even 1 sale a month upgrading to plus would be costly and non profitable for us.

I have looked into age verify apps as well but unfortunately they are not compliant with what our law here is requiring. Licensing for those that sell alcohol now require a age birth verification at the point of sale ( I.e checkout) and also a ways of capturing that on record so if somone does apply a false date of birth it can be contested in a court of law.

We are enjoying working with shopify and would really like to avoid having to go to another store front platform as Im aware of others using different platforms such as wordpress and they all comply with these terms on more basic plans. Are shopify considering fixing this for their basic customers? It does not seem very fair and equal when we have no choice becuase of restricing laws.
