Difficulty with Shopify Theme Customization

Hi everyone,

I'm currently working on customizing my Shopify store’s theme and running into a few issues. I’m trying to modify the homepage layout, but whenever I make changes in the theme editor, they don’t appear on the live site.

Here are the details:

  • I’m using the Debut theme.
  • I’ve tried both editing the theme’s settings directly and using custom CSS for the homepage sections.
  • After making changes in the editor, I publish them, but the changes don’t reflect when I view the site live.
  • I’ve cleared my browser cache and tried in different browsers, but the issue persists.

Has anyone encountered something like this before? Any suggestions on what might be causing the changes not to appear, or any troubleshooting tips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards,
John Jani

Hi @johanjani,

I am from Mageplaza - Shopify solution expert.

This issue is often related to caching, publishing, or conflicts in your theme settings. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Verify the Correct Theme is Published:

  • Go to Online Store > Themes in the Shopify admin.
  • Ensure that the Debut theme with your changes is the one marked as "Live."

2. Check Theme Publishing

  • After making changes in the theme editor, make sure to save and publish those changes.

3. Review Custom Code

  • If you’ve added custom CSS or made changes directly in the theme files, check for errors. A small mistake in custom CSS or Liquid files can prevent changes from displaying.
  • Ensure custom CSS is not overwritten by existing styles using browser developer tools to inspect the applied styles.

4. Browser and CDN Caching

  • Even after clearing your browser cache, content may still be cached by Shopify's Content Delivery Network (CDN). To bypass it:
    • Add a random query string to the URL, e.g., ?v=123.
  • Use Incognito mode to ensure there’s no browser-related caching.

5.Preview vs. Live Site

  • The theme editor displays a preview of your changes. If changes don’t reflect live:
    • Ensure you’re not editing a duplicate or unpublished theme.
    • Publish the theme after making changes.

6.Check for Errors in the Console

  • Open your browser’s developer tools and navigate to the Console tab while viewing the live site. Look for errors that might indicate issues with scripts or assets.
