Dimensional weight on shipping rates

My store sells products that are heavy and are packaged in large boxes. Because of this shipping rates just based on weight won't be accurate on shopify. So is there a way a can input dimensional weights in shopify so that the shipping rate is accurate? Can I put the dim weight in the weight section of each product or do I need an app to do this.

If you're familiar with coding or using custom metafields, you can store the dimensions of the products in metafields and use an app or custom Shopify script to calculate dimensional weight based on those values.

I want to learn more about how to do this.  I sell large items that only weigh a little. ( Luggage )  We really need to have shipping to be calculated on something more than just weight.   I wonder why Shopify or someone else can come up with a way to convert the dimensional weight to calculate proper shipping costs.   I don't know coding, but I want to resolve this issue. I am losing money and/or overcharging and losing sales... UGH !
