Has anyone had any experience with American Express cards being rejected for recurring (subscription) payments? Customer has had $0.10 charged and received an error that they couldn't update their saved card details to an AMEX.

To gather a bit more information, are you able to share what payment gateway you're using? For example, is it Shopify payments? If your payment gateway supports all major credit cards, then American Express should be support. To learn more, you can check out this Guide.
