When it comes to restricted or prohibited products on Shopify, the first thing to look into is this link on our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), which details the activities that are prohibited on the platform and go against the AUP.
On that same list, we have a more detailed breakdown of specific restricted items here that cannot be sold on the platform.
Aside from our AUP, there are other things to consider when you're setting up to sell your products:
- Advertiser Policies: If you wish to advertise your goods on platforms such as Google or Facebook, you must take into account their own policies and regulations around what products can be advertised there. If a product can be sold on Shopify, it does not always guarantee that you will be able to advertise it on a platform that outlines it as a "prohibited item". - Payment providers: Some products and businesses are considered to be high risk which means that certain payment providers will not allow you to integrate with them and sell products using their payment gateways. If you're based in a country where Shopify Payments is supported, I have a list of prohibited businesses for you here. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and can get updated from time to time. It is also good to remember that if something is prohibited on Shopify Payments, it will likely be restricted on other major payment providers, in which case you may need to opt for a high risk gateway such as EMB, linked here.
