Does shopify core functionality require jQuery?

Im looking to develop my own theme and just wanted to clarify if jQuery was essential to Shopify functionality.

Im assuming its being used for cart and checkout functionality.

Can someone please explain how and if i can remove jQuery?

and also if there are some resources about this provide some links.

It's great that you are looking to develop your own Shopify theme! Secure portions of Shopify functionality such as the Admin, or checkout, cannot be edited or accessed. Furthermore, themes are unrelated to Shopify core functionality, so this isn't something you will need to worry about.

Themes may not always include jQuery (a Javascript library) but if you do choose to implement it please do so conditionally. Read more about the 3 Golden Rules of Javascript in Themes. 

Some basic requirements of developing your own theme include:

• Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Shopify Partner Account
• Development Store for testing

Most importantly, make sure to reference the Shopify Developers - Theme Documentation for information on theme settings, liquid and file structures. Another resource you may find helpful is our Shopify Partners - Theme Development Articles.
