Hey @Molly8,

This message is indicating that your browser's third-party cookie settings are preventing Shopify from setting cookies. To fix this issue, you'll need to enable third-party cookies in your browser's settings.

Here are the steps to enable third-party cookies in Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Scroll down and click on Advanced
  5. Under Privacy and security, click on Site settings
  6. Click on Cookies and site data
  7. Toggle the switch for "Block third-party cookies" to off.

Once you have enabled third-party cookies, try accessing your Shopify store again. If you continue to have issues, try using a different browser or clearing your browser's cache and cookies again.

Otherwise, how is your store going? I noticed you are using the Minimal theme which is a free theme created by Shopify. It is one of the popular themes that has a responsive and wide layout, which looks great on many devices. It is a simple but very mobile-friendly theme! You can unpack more of Minimal's features on our Shopify Blog here too.

Hi

I moved over to Shopify Mobile App because I was using the desktop site on
my ipad. It worked well for a while but then I had browser issues.

Kind regards

Any ETA for when this will be fixed? This seems to happen since Shopify first switched to the https://admin.shopify.com/store/store-handle structure for some stores (which btw makes it much harder to read the store handle at just a glance).

Please mark my post as " Accepted Solution" if it helped you solve your issue.

Same here. Has there been a resolution yet. It happen in both chrome & safari. Shopify has not shown a valid fix on its site yet.

On one of the occasions that I reported this third party cookies issue the reply was they were aware of it and it is being worked on to find an answer at Shopify. That was 3 months ago. I imagine there are quite a few people looking into this on the boards too . Ims sure we will hear of all kinds of ideas from simple to way to complicated for average Shopify owner to implement. It really needs to be addressed and corrected at Shopify end.  Clearly, we have to keep it alive until it no longer hinders the general operating of ALL SHOPIFY SITES. Thanks for posting

There are SEVERAL posts about this same issue. It appears to keep happening. I would recommend escalating this one. TIA!

This is really sloppy work on SHOPIFY PART. They have all these teck Savy people still trying to offer solutions to an obvious flaw that needs to be taken more seriously.
Maybe anyone with a Mac is going through this? Is that why CHROME is being offered as the solution?   too many businesses are hooked on to Shopify now.

I am having the exact same issue on my iMac for the past few hours...the pop up to enable third party cookies keeps appearing even though all cookies are enabled.  Also I cannot edit my theme (Automation) as it keeps re-directing to the Password page--effectively inhibiting me from building my storefront, as the Password page is the only area within the theme that can be edited at the moment.

Please provide a fix soon.

This didn't happen yesterday, only today when I logged into Shopify.  I am on an iMac on Ventura 13.3.1

Thanks for your work on this.

Hi Moira,

We use Safari and are having issues, as shown in the attached screenshot. We've followed the instructions on the link for this issue but it does nothing other than log us out of the website. Could you provide some support?

Regards,

Simone

Worked for me in Safari and macOS. Though I'd likely keep the setting on and use Chrome for that purpose. I don't want to compromise my security

Hi Moira

Yes, I used this solution initially which was giving me issues and constantly logging me out but it has since worked, thank you.

However, I'm still not satisfied or comfortable being made to turn this setting off when previously there were no issues. May I ask why this is now the only way to access Shopify stores on Safari?

Kindest,
Simone

To access this setting from the current version of Safari:

Safari → Settings→ Privacy Tab → Website tracking → Prevent cross-site tracking.

Here are the steps to enable third-party cookies in Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Scroll down and click on Advanced
  5. Under Privacy and security, click on Site settings
  6. Click on Cookies and site data
  7. Toggle the switch for "Block third-party cookies" to off.

That’s not a real solution as it’s just asking people to disable the one thing that best preserves privacy and prevents companies from selling customer data. A stop-gap measure would be to recommend that someone turn it off temporarily while they work on their store and then turn it back on when they are done. Turning it off and leaving it off is a bad idea from a privacy standpoint. The real solution would be for Shopify to stop cross-site tracking their customers so that we wouldn’t have to turn off valuable privacy features to use Shopify.

We understand your concerns regarding privacy and cross-site tracking. As a company, we value our customers' privacy and work diligently to ensure the security of your data.

We're actively working on finding a better solution that does not involve disabling such features. Your feedback is invaluable in this process.

Has this been solved as far as not having to compromise the security of our browser by disabling cross-site tracking? I'm working from a Mac using safari, as are a lot of people.

The only solution I see is turning off cross-site tracking and ideally people should have this feature turned on to protect their devices. It's really only a trade off, not a real solution.

Any update on this? I'm unable to progress with a potential new customer's website as I cannot use the theme editor due to the message "Enable third party cookies on Shopify for the best experience".... Enabling cross-site tracking is not a solution, that's like losing your front-door house key and being told to leave your back-door unlocked as a solution.

Isn't it dangerous to tell us to disable cross site tracking? And isn't it against european laws to force users to get tracked by all kinds of random website, so your software can work properly? I think you guys should create a safari add-on to solve this problem.

For anyone having this problem: When you go into your google settings to create exceptions to allow shopify as a company who can use third-party cookies, inserting “[*.]” before a domain name creates an exception for the entire domain in your google settings (for third-party cookie exceptions). For example, adding “[*.]google.com” means that third-party cookies can also be active for mail.google.com, because it’s part of google.com. I think this is ideal and actually gets the job done. Don't include the http:// or www when inserting this, I made that mistake initially and it didn't work, just put the [*.] symbols before the actual domain with the .com and things should go very smoothly, that's how it worked for me.

Here are the steps to enable third-party cookies in Chrome for Shopify as an exception:

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Privacy and security
  5. Third-Party Cookies
  6. Beneath Advanced you can ADD sites allowed to use third-party cookies (exceptions)
  7. Click ADD
  8. Input information as described with domain following [*.]
  9. i.e.[*.]shopify.com
  10. other examples [*.]adobe.com or [*.]facebook.com, etc
  11. Do NOT include https://www.

Hope that Helps!

Hi Everyone,

After two weeks of not being able to edit my storefront, I FINALLY found the setting that is triggering this pop-up, so would like to share it with everyone in hopes that it can resolve the issue for you as well.

I am on Safari and the setting that triggered this pop-up for me was the "Prevent cross-site tracking" setting.  This box needs to be unchecked.

To access this setting from the current version of Safari:

Safari → Settings→ Privacy Tab → Website tracking → Prevent cross-site tracking

Make sure there is no check adjacent to "Prevent cross-site tracking"

Hope this helps!

Thanks @Zei1,

The original solution provided was for those using Google Chrome. My apologies that I did not include where to turn off cross-site tracking via Safari, as explained in this community thread:
