Experiences with gift card security breach on online stores?

Has anyone else had this issue. A while ago I set up the Gift Card facility on my Shopify store. I don't sell many Gift Cards but a few have gone through fine.  A few weeks ago I had six attemts within 15 minutes by fraudsters trying to use false gift card codes on my website, where they would make purchases using only a small proportion of the gift card along with a credit card. This all shows up as normal in online purchases but immediately raised suspicions as one of the cards had an online value of £1000. Other values were a lot above my highest Card value so were also spotted. The addresses of the fraudsters were around the country (UK), all entered credit card details at the same time for partial purchase of merchandise. I contacted Shopify who's only advice was to cancel the orders. I was given no explanation other than for them to say these things happen. They could not give my any explanation as to how this security breach occured. Quite poor from Shopify really. I have since removed the Shopify Gift Card facility from my website as I no longer have confidence in the security Shopify offers.
