Formatting Does Not Transfer from Parent Site

Formatting Does Not Transfer from Parent Site

Hi!

I've been wondering why do links not transfer when I copy-paste collection descriptions from one parent site to Shopify? It used to work like a month ago. Is there any way to bring this back?

I also have the same issue when copy-pasting for blog posts. For some reason, the headers do apply but they appear to be in bold formatting in the text box but appears with no bold when I look at the preview. Again, this wasn't an issue a month ago.

Is there a fix for this?

Hi @Contenter

I get how frustrating this is—copying content should be simple, but when links, bold text, and formatting disappear, it feels like an unnecessary headache. It used to work fine, and now it doesn’t. Let’s go over why this is happening and what you can do to fix it.

Why is This Happening?

A few things could be causing this issue:

1-Shopify’s Rich Text Editor Update

  • Shopify might have updated how their text editor processes copied content. Some updates strip certain HTML elements (like embedded links and text styling) when pasting.

2-Source Formatting Differences

  • If you're copying from a site with different HTML formatting rules, Shopify’s editor may not recognize certain elements, causing links and styles to get lost.

3-Clipboard Formatting Issues

  • Some browsers or devices don’t always copy the underlying HTML properly, so what looks fine in the text box might not transfer correctly when previewed.

4-Cache or Browser-Specific Glitches

  • If this issue started recently, your browser’s cache or an outdated session could be interfering with how text is processed.

How to Fix It

1. Use "Paste and Match Style"

Instead of just pasting with Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac), try:

  • Ctrl + Shift + V (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + V (Mac)
  • This pastes text while stripping unnecessary formatting, allowing Shopify to apply its default styles.

2. Paste into a Plain Text Editor First

  • Copy the content into Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac, in plain text mode), then copy and paste it into Shopify.
  • This removes hidden formatting issues that may be causing inconsistencies.

3. Use Shopify's HTML Editor

  • Click the "Show HTML" button (<> icon) in Shopify’s text editor.
  • Paste your content here and manually reapply formatting (bold, links, etc.).

4. Clear Cache & Try a Different Browser

  • Clear your browser cache or try using Chrome, Firefox, or Edge to see if the issue persists.

5. Check for Shopify Updates or Bugs

  • Since this wasn’t an issue before, it could be a Shopify bug or update. Check Shopify’s status page or community forums to see if others are reporting the same problem.

For Blog Posts: Why is Bold Formatting Not Showing?

This seems like a separate issue but could be linked to the same formatting glitch. Here’s what I suggest:

  • Make sure you’re applying bold formatting using Shopify’s editor after pasting.
  • Check the HTML view to see if <strong> or <b> tags are present—if not, add them manually.
  • If the preview still doesn’t show bold text, try saving and refreshing the page to see if the style applies.

Final Thoughts

This might be tied to a recent Shopify change, but these workarounds should help you get your formatting back. If the issue continues, you can reach out to Shopify support and see if they have a fix on their end.

If you need any other assistance, I am willing to help.
Best regards,
Daisy.
