Fraudulent Activity

I've been receiving emails from this Shopify website stating my recovery codes are available for download, payment accounts are being set up, and authenticators are being activated.

I have never heard of Shopify before, and I can't even log in to the account with my own email to due to the 2FA. I made this account just to post this seeing as customer service is practically non-existent at this company.

Can someone working here delete my account and whatever fraudulent activity is happening under my name? Or do I have to proceed with legal action here?

Hi @stavi

I've carefully reviewed your situation, and I understand your frustration and concern about the fraudulent activity associated with a Shopify account seemingly created using your information. It's definitely alarming to receive emails about account activity you didn't initiate. I'll do my best to guide you through the steps you can take.

Understanding the Issue

It appears someone has used your email address to create a Shopify account without your consent. This is a serious security issue, and it's good that you're taking steps to address it. The fact that 2FA is enabled on the fraudulent account, while inconvenient for you, actually works in your favor, preventing the perpetrator from easily accessing it.

Steps to Take Immediately

1-Change Your Email Password: This is the first and most crucial step. Even though you can't access the Shopify account, securing your email prevents the fraudster from potentially receiving further information about the fake account. I strongly recommend using a strong, unique password that you don’t use for any other accounts.

2-Report the Phishing Emails: If the emails you received look suspicious (e.g., unusual formatting, sender address that doesn't quite look like it's actually from Shopify), report them as phishing attempts to your email provider. This will help prevent others from falling victim to similar scams.

3-Contact Shopify Support (Even if it's Difficult): I know you mentioned difficulties reaching them, but it's essential to try. Explain the situation clearly, providing any details from the fraudulent emails. Here are some ways to attempt contact:

  • Shopify Help Center: Look for their live chat option or explore their help articles for guidance.
  • Social Media: Sometimes, reaching out via Twitter or Facebook can get a faster response, as companies are often sensitive to public inquiries.
  • Email (If Available): If you can find a direct support email address, send a detailed message outlining the issue.

4-Document Everything: Keep records of all communication, including the phishing emails, any support tickets you create, and the dates and times of your attempts to contact Shopify. This documentation could be helpful if you need to escalate the issue.

Legal Action (As a Last Resort)

I sincerely hope it doesn't come to this, but if Shopify is unresponsive or unable to resolve the issue, consulting with a legal professional might be necessary. They can advise you on the best course of action based on your specific situation and jurisdiction. I understand this sounds daunting, but it's a step to consider if all else fails.

My Personal Perspective

I've seen similar situations before, and it's truly unsettling. I believe that persistence is key. Don't give up on contacting Shopify. Explain the urgency of the situation and emphasize that this is a case of identity theft. I also recommend taking screenshots of the fraudulent emails and any other relevant information. This will bolster your case when you contact them.

If you need any other assistance, I am willing to help.

Best regards,

Daisy.
