I've had a note on the cart page for almost a decade but people will often skip straight to checkout and then tell me they couldn't add a note.

 

Without being a Plus user is there any way to get a note on a checkout page? Any app that can do this?

 

I'd route people to the cart before checkout but every click you make a user jump through you have a chance to lose them. So while I'm glad they go straight to payment it'd really be nice to have that note applicable to the checkout page. I feel this kind of idea should have been integrated a long time ago as an on-off-checkbox option in Checkouts workflow. 😕

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback on this. @KetanKumar is correct in that you would need to be on the Shopify Plus plan in order to make alterations of that nature on the checkout pages. 

 

Depending on the theme you are using I would recommend turning the cart page into a popup or slide out drawer. The free Shopify 2.0 themes should all support that functionality. You can edit the card options for your theme by opening the theme editor, going to theme settings and choose "Cart". 

 

It might help as well to add a bolded note to the product page for items that might need customization or extra notes, or add the option for a customization field on the product page itself.

Late to the party but (as Shay mentioned) adding a note to the product page can also do the trick so your customers don't miss it. I wrote up a guide about how to do it without paying for apps. The post is for florist shops, but the same steps apply for other stores!
