I am wanting my customers to be able to updated their email account as well as their password. They can do password right now but does anyone have any advice on how to allow customers to login and update their own email address to a new one?
I know I can do it from the backend but I dont want them to always message me.

@ShavingTimeDave There is still no way for a customer to edit their email w/o using the Shopify Admin API. Said another way, an app is required. Either a private/custom app made for you, or a ready-made third-party app such as Customer Fields.
Hey @Jeffbarker208.
Thanks for reaching out.
This is a great question! In order for your customers to make changes to the customer account they will need to reach out to the store to make changes to the email address used.
At the moment, we can edit customer profiles to make the change for the customer and add a new email address.
With that being said, I can definitely see how this would be beneficial for you and your business to allow your customers to make these changes on their behalf so I am going to provide this as a suggestion to our developers.
At Shopify, we pride ourselves on the continued growth and development of our platform, and we are only able to strive towards this goal with feedback and comments from merchants just like you. There is never a guarantee that a request will get a Green Light, or make it to a product launch, but we always appreciate merchants reaching out with any suggestion.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Any update on this? I have also had customers contact me about changing their email address is their account and wondering why they can't just do it themselves.
This is an essential feature as far as I'm concerned. As a solopreneur I need automations like this. Please make this happen Shopify.
We need this feature. Please set this a priority.
Welcome to this thread - I am moving to another provider if they don't sort this kind of thing... We have a lot of customers and almost every day we get 3-5 people facing the issue. This thread is old now, and still is has NOT been looked at
More basic functionality missing from Shopify..."It's not a BUG - it's an APP!"
Not only this, but it seems the Shopify system doesn't like it when you change customer emails back to something they used before?
Would love an update on this feature. It's a bit mind-boggling that ya'll don't have this. Is it at least in the works??
I second that inquiry - it's not a dealbreaker for us yet, but definitely a completely unnecessary obstacle. Especially @TimothyD's arguments about validation are most important here.
Thank you Ollie! Seeing as it's been a few months, is this on the roadmap? Is there any chance you could get an update for us by chance? Greatly appreciated!
I guess it's floating around in the feature request list still.
There is an app which acts as a drop-in replacement for Shopify's customer login area and offers the feature for customers to change their e-mail addresses themselves - and has an overall better interface: https://apps.shopify.com/customer-accounts
I'm rather hesitant to allow a 3rd-party app access to my customer data, so it's not an option for me, but it definitely makes for a proper interim solution, and maybe the folks at Shopify can draw some inspiration from it - or buy the app, employ the developer and integrate it within the base platform. 😄
Thank you NicoRi, I appreciate the heads up about the app. It’s good to know we have a way of dealing with this in the meantime. I am a little baffled something this simple isn’t part of the update like they did this winter. There must be a reason for that and I wonder what it is.
Hey all, understand the pain point here. This has been an issue on Shopify since the beginning. That's the sole reason we built the Customer Fields app back in 2015-- to allow your customers to edit their own name and/or email.
You can accomplish this "edit account" functionality on the app's Lite plan, or upgrade to Pro to collect additional customer information with a custom registration form, or post-registration on the customer account page.
To @NicoRi's point about sharing customer data-- we get it, and that's why we offer a thorough privacy policy for complete transparency on what we do with your customer's data. (Short summary: We're a "data controller" and don't do anything with customer data, except allow you to manage it).
Thank you Michael, I appreciate you sharing this possible solution.
Any news on this please?

Hi Ollie,
We would love this feature too. Any idea on whether Shopify are going to add this in the future?
@JL - Shopify have made no announcements or plans to build this in natively.
Shopify has recently launched new customer accounts. If you are using new customer accounts, customers can now change their name but NOT their email address. See screenshot: https://share.heliumdev.com/z8uRx7oO
There is currently NO way to edit customer email via new customer accounts, but it is possible via classic customer accounts although an app is required.
Check out the Pros and Cons of New Customer Accounts blog for more info on that topic.
@JL if this functionality is worth $12/mo to you, then check out Helium Customer Fields.
Yes, this is a "MUST" quite frankly. We are constantly getting requests for this, and they should be able to change them. I am currently making a YouTube video about the lack of options for customers. We sell digital products, and for customers to be able to change their own email addresses is really something that needs sorting out.
What a pain. Having a customer contact the store to "change their email" is problematic because you must really verify that the email request is legit. We had a situation in the past where someone emailed a request to update the email address and they did not have the authority to do that. Customer's should have to log into their own account to make the update!!! I don't want to have to try and verify an email is legit and not been spoofed before making updates. Come on Shopify!!!! We are almost in 2023!!
Adding a +1 to this. We would also really love to see this kind of autonomy available to our client's customers.
I can't believe this feature isn't available. You have to rely on the customer contacting you or a third party app. If the customer contacts you it's difficult to validate and presents a security issue.
I agree with you, although technically, there is a third option.
Build a custom app.
For better or worse, Shopify's Admin API is the only way to let a customer edit their own information. Here's the documentation: https://shopify.dev/docs/api/admin-rest/2023-07/resources/customer#put-customers-customer-id
In the buy vs build argument, I doubt the 'build' option is cost-effective, but it is an option.
I suppose what surprises me is that the default position is to have customers contact you separately about changing their email address, this feels inherently less secure.
Shopify is a fantastic platform, but this kind of basic functionality should be included.
