How can I add an age checker at checkout on a basic Shopify account?

I run a small family winery business.  We sell most of our wine directly from our cellar door and small amounts online via Shopify.  By law I must have an age checker and the preferred method from government licencing authorities is to have the age checker at the actual check out.  I would prefer this as well as it would allow people to browse without entering their DOB until they actually buy.  To be able to put the age checker at the check out using Shopify we have to upgrade to Shopify PLUS.  In other words not very user friendly for small starter businesses that Shopify seems to think it's good at supporting!  To comply with licencing and to use Shopify I would have to pay $2,000/ month for Shopify PLUS.  NOT IMPRESSED SHOPIFY!  Surely you can fix this issue.

We do have Third Party Apps available in our Shopify App Store that would be able to provide the age verification feature you're after.

Here are a couple of apps you can take a look at -

• Age Checker/Age Verification | Shopify App Store
  This app provides a free plan and has a great review rating of 4.9. It is an easy installation and the free plan looks to be all you need to add the age verification on your website. This app also allows you to have the age checkbox inserted on the checkout page as per your government requirements.

• Age Check | Shopify App Store
  This app does not have a free plan, however it is priced at $4.95 per month and allows you to fully customize the text, colours and background image so this can match the scheme of your store. It is also optimised for mobile as well!

Our Shopify Plus plan has a specific criteria that businesses need to meet in order to be eligible for it so this was definitely not the only and best option for you to be advised about in regards to having age verification on your website. Our Shopify App Store should be your go-to for any features that are not yet on the Shopify native platform.

These solutions are unfortunately not FDA-compliant.

The legislation requires that a true age verification/match is being done, as the responsibility lies on the seller. 

If the buyer clicks the box and lies about his/her age, the responsibility would still be on the seller, as not being diligent enough.

 When will Shopify introduce solutions that allow sellers to manage sales compliance for age-regulated businesses, without the need to upgrade to the cost-prohibitive Shopify Plus? 

The same goes for all sales compliance requirements related to alcohol sales: sales tax to the county level and volume limits.
