All things Shopify and commerce
I recently ran into my first big issue with Shopify after trying to add a variant to one of my products. The variant was based around reducing shipping costs by making an option for the same product with smaller packaging.
The issue with this is that there is no way to add package sizing to individual products or variants, meaning I have to find a workaround to charge the proper amount for shipping. Seeing as I already pay $80 for Shopify monthly, a third-party app is out of the question. I could charge a flat rate for shipping, but it could be either more or less expensive than the actual shipping cost. After doing some research, I see that this issue has been brought up several times in the community, and the most popular "solution" provided was to adjust the weights of the items, which wouldn't work with providers that use dimensional weight.
This really doesn't make sense when you think about the fact that most stores probably aren't going to have only one size of packaging for several types of products.
I really enjoy using Shopify and all of it's features, but this issue alone is causing me to reconsider where I run my online store. It doesn't make sense to pay as much as i do per month when such a fundamental part of selling products is lacking in such a major way. After seeing how many other people were affected by this issue, it only makes sense that this feature would be added.
I'm having the same issue, set my box sizes up, but there is no way to allocate them to products, so not sure what the point is in being able to do that now!
I'll keep my fingers crossed someone with the knowledge comes across this thread soon!
