How can I automate reminder emails for unused gift card balances?

Hi there, 

I am wondering if there is a way to send out an email to all customers that have a gift card balance left on an existing card that is less that the initial gift card amount? I know that I can manually go in and re-send each gift card, but I am having a hard time editing the email so say "reminder, don't forget to use your gift card" or something along those lines

I don't think so, while the card may be purchased under their account, Shopify does not know who the user will be. The gift card balance report does not include any information that would tie it to anybody. The workaround may be adding a "intended recipient" to your card orders. Then you would have to manually figure out which new customer is using it. Add them to a list and email. That seems like a headache though.
