I need to edit robots.txt file because, the "https://www.jeremy-hoye.co.uk/collections/unique-engagement-rings" page not getting link juice value. How to modify robots file?
Solved! Go to the solution
@Grumble where are you seeing that "The $80 (?) plan has "Ability to edits robots.txt" " ?
Unless someone is an expert, I cannot imagine anyone editing this on their own.
That's the problem with allowing access to this feature and why there has to be constant warnings one persons imagination does not prevent costly financial mistakes when scaling individual behaviors for over 1 million stores.
We should be allowed to edit whatever we need to as we are paying for the ability to customize our store the way we need to.
Your paying for a service with a feature list, you are NOT paying to be able to do whatever you want because you stomp your foot.
That is an important clinical business distinction that should temper any ego or need for control when dealing with other businesses giving you a service.
There are many aspect of shopify , or SASS's in general , that remain off limits to casual handling.
Merchants that want that level of control and responsibility should self host their website stack and if they want to use Shopify for checkout use the shopify buy buttons or shopify js sdk for checkout integration.
About 6 months ago when I was asked to run a Shopify store, I researched it and found it was a 'Feature' of the $79 plan. It is also mentioned earlier in this thread somewhere that you need to 'Upgrade' to get it. I see it's gone from their 'Features' page now and the 'improvements' list has a lot missing. Perhaps because they have finally caved to demand? Here's the announcement, so it was obviously removed from the lower plans. https://twitter.com/tobi/status/1405981029928779782
I'm laughing at you right that response because this was clearly a class issue being that it was available only to those who could afford to, or were willing to pay for the higher priced package. Your rambling on about foot stomping and ego makes no sense. This has nothing to do with ego, as you clearly have an abundance of it yourself.
I don't know if you get perks from Shopify for maintaining your position that Shopify is always right no matter what, but here's a news flash, just because a company makes a decision, doesn't mean it's a good one for it's customers. People want what's best for their business especially if they pay for a service. Shopify was not "giving" me a service as you wrote. I PAY for my service and now we can thank Shopify for doing the right thing by its' paying customers.
You have written the most inappropriate, inaccurate responses because you only want to be right and argue with those who come to this community for solutions to a problem. You add ZERO value here. You have written wrong, made-up answers to argue why this was not allowed, meanwhile the simple and correct answer was that it has always been available, but in the much more expensive package for the elites of the Shopify community, but instead you rambled on. You had no clue, lolol!! This change by Shopify has been made by because they listened to OUR complaints and AGREE that it's the fair thing to do. No need for me to self host, lolol! Plus the simpler solution would be to move to another ecomm platform that provides that service, smh.
Not even sure why you are here, other than to feel good by trying to berate customers and try to be right, when it's now proven that you've been wrong all along. Narcissist much? Buh bye!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I hope this Paul guy can just go away now as he is clueless and inappropriate and now asking you for answers, which is really very funny, lol. Where have you been this entire discussion?! 🙂
Charging $50 extra for access to robots.txt was the issue. "Merchants should self-host". How do we self-host Shopify? I bought 2 Shopify stores for the alleged history. One has been migrated elsewhere, the other belongs to a business partner and it's in the "Later" box. In reality, WordPress and Shopify are equally technically complex.
@PaulNewton As Shopify has relented and included it in the lower plan in the last few days, the features list no longer refers to it. Was touted as a "Feature" of the $79 plan some 6 months ago when I researched it. The web page might be in a cache somewhere.
To self host, you would need to build a site from scratch. But the easy way is to use one of the other ecommerce sites that allow the edits, you would just need to research them to find which will best suit your needs. I was thinking of using one of the others when opening my new store, but now there is no need to do that. A few weeks ago, someone had made a long posted here on the problem this created for customers, and that it should be allowed as it is allowed elsewhere, but that comment has been deleted, like he said they would do. Wishing you the very best success with your stores going forward.
Shopify did what every good business would do, and that is to listen to it's customers. How can a business be successful without happy customers?

I don't think this is correct, otherwise surely all the SEO blog post about how to disallow pages via meta tags alone, would simply say upgrade to the $79 plan surely?
I have worked on stores from basic to Plus and it has never been an option to those clients. Even to the extent that we built a whole separate storefront using the APIs in order to have control over robots.txt and the URL structure to suit their needs.
Thank you for the kind wishes. I've been in IT for 45 years and web dev for 20, so I usually use Woo. Was just taking the Mick at Paul's suggestions.
This is an accepted solution.

Due to the age of the topic, I will be locking this thread and marking it as resolved to help direct anyone that lands on this page. If you have any questions about the new feature, please do not hesitate to create a new post under our "Techincal QA" board.
