How can I effectively manage discount codes for specific products?

Hello, I am wondering the best way to set up a discount code, which only applies to certain products in the cart. Currently I have created a sale exclusive collection excluding all sale products from a discount code (via compare at price $0)however when a customer adds a sale product and a full price product to cart the discount code will not only just apply to the sale product, it won't work on either. Is there a more efficient way of managing this other than applying the discount code to certain products?
