How can I efficiently remove unnecessary product tags?

Having a minor, almost trivial, issue:

Over the course of years, my company have built quite an exhaustive list of tags. At this point, we don't need 80% of them, and it's wasting time trawling through them every time we need to tag products/products in the feedback section.

I simply want to remove the tags themselves, and I've spoken with a chat advisor that claimed this wasn't possible. Can anyone advise a way in which to do this?

As far as I remember, first you need to remove the tag from all products which may have it and then, after some time it should disappear from the lists automatically.
