How can I enable PayPal Pay in 4 at checkout?

I'm needing help in adding the "PayPal Pay in 4" function at checkout. 

Does someone have an easy step by step how to enable this in my shopify store?

I've looked for the topics on here but none of them actually explain how to do it 😔

I'm in Australia and I meet the eligibility criteria. 

On the PayPal's website it's saying people in Australia are eligible. 

I still cant find the PayPal pay in 4 option in the "Alternative Payments"

I know a few stores that have this option that are based in Australia, but for some reason I can't add it?

I'm also having the same problem. Aussie Shopify store owner here and Paypal just approved me for Pay in 4.

It's very frustrating because Paypal have simple processes to follow for other ecommerce platforms, but nothing like that for Shopify - which is the biggest one out there!

I chatted to support today and they linked me to this post, so hopefully we can both get some help. I was also asked to post on the SDK board which I've just done. I'll let you know if I find out any info.

Paypal Pay-in-4 is now available for Australian merchants. I tried to follow your steps but Paypal pay in 4 isn't listed as an alternative payment option.

So American users of Shopify can use Pay In Four but not Australian ? from further comments below it seems this will not happen ever .... cant imagine its PayPal preventing it as they are approving Aussie businesses ... seems like a poor choice on Shopifys part to not allow it , I have received requests from customers to have it , may have to look elsewhere for my website. Is there any chance it will ever be approved ??

It's available to Australian merchants now, but the bad news is that there is no official implementation from Paypal with Shopify.

I contacted PayPal support and got this response:

Hello James, I'm Kevin. I understand you're trying to setup pay in 4 with your Shopify account. It's good you reached to us so you don't keep trying because the pay in 4 option isn't compatible with Shopify and that's why you're having those issues. I apologise for that.

I replied and said that's unfortunate because it would really be a great optiob for my customers. Then he replied:

I tried to call you to talk about it further but I didn't reach you. It's ok I was just going to tell you I understand where you're coming from but I don't see it ever being compatible with Shopify. That's just what I've been informed.

Considering how big Shopify is, I find this very disappointing. Being able to offer pay in 4 for my customers would definitely help get more sales.

Just following up on this legitimate request. I contacted Paypal today and got a similar "No Go on Shopify" response;  

Thank you for messaging PayPal today. I understand you are wanting to use Pay in 4 on Shopify.  I surely wish you could!  Sadly, at this time Shopify does not let Pay in 4 be offered.  Hopefully, they will soon.  I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Yet in the thread we have OrdinaryAgency suggesting a simple code insertion will provide a solution. (Stated twice in fact).

Has anyone tried this method and can report if it was successful?

Your site looks good, but the paypal pay in 4 process is not clear -
especially to a new customer or person who hasn't used pay in 4 before.

The product pages have the correct pay in 4 messaging, but when I added to
cart there was no further mention of Paypal pay in 4 - even when I skipped
express checkout and went to the payment options page. It has Paypal as an
option but doesn't mention pay in 4. Does this get offered when the
customer clicks on Paypal for the payment option?

Yeh, paypal - its an option once you choose to pay with PayPal and go to
their portal. They are not separate companies or anything. Costs between
30-2000 are possible, they also don't charge unlike other bnpl who usually
get their 2%

Hi OrdinaryAgency, with lots of respect for helping the community, unfortunately, I too was unable to visibly see the Pay in 4 option in your checkout, regardless of how deep I went.

No worries Rob

This is an option you get when you select PayPal. Its not a stand alone
option like other bnpl. When you select the Paypal option, you are
presented with it then. aslong as the purchase is between $30-$2000 you can
check out via pay in 4.

Even other bnpl's require you to log in to check out like that, so its the
same as them.

Edit - I can confirm this works for other readers - I was using a business account to test it, when I tried with my personal account I could see the PayIn4 option.

just an update to this as per ordinary agency instructions - if you having problems getting the messaging in the correct place on the product page through editing the html code, ive found an easy way.

go to your theme editor, and the to you product page, add a new section " custom liquid" enter the code he suggested and then you can just move that section to wherever you want the messaging to appear.

Hi Steve, this change is a little complex if you haven't done it before, so I'll try to help answer your questions:

1. What can I change to display in their currency? I assume you mean for the messaging that appears on the Product Page. . The code you will add to the Product page template (image below) just adds a standard message. The choice of 'Pay in 4' is made by the customer after they proceed to the Checkout page, click on Paypal, login, and they then have to scroll down in the Paypal screen and choose Pay in 4 option inside Paypal.
   
2. Also do I have to do something on the Paypal side to offer this to customers? Two things: (a) your account needs to be a Paypal Business account. (b) you need to login https://developer.paypal.com/dashboard/ with your Paypal credentials, select Apps & Credentials, and on the right hand side click the slider button from Sandbox to Live. Click Create App to create a new project, and name it anything you like. It will then create a 'Client ID' and Secret. The 'Client ID' is what you need for (3.). 
3. What next? So, you can then go into Shopify Admin, in the menu, go into Online Store>Themes. Before we go any further, you should backup/duplicate your Theme in case you make any errors. Next to the Customize button you'll see a little button with 3 dots. Click on that and choose Duplicate. This will save a copy below that you can switch back to in case anything goes wrong.
   Now, click on Customize button for your Current Active Theme. At top of screen in the middle you'll see a drop down which by default is showing 'Home page'. Click on this and choose Products>the Product Template you are using (likely 'Default product' template). Here you can mouse over the elements/divs in the page and you'll see them highlight with a '+' symbol below. Click on the '+' symbol where you'd like to place the 'Pay in 4' message and choose to add a 'Custom Liquid' section. Paste in the code above and only replace the YOUR-CLIENT-ID characters in the URL with the client ID you created and copied above. Save, and your done.
   FYI, this whole thread is assuming that you already have a Paypal Business account that has already been setup/connected to your Shopify site. The code isn't changing anything at all Checkout, as the customer still has to choose Paypal as their payment option and once transported to Paypal, and they login, they then need to scroll down and choose 'Pay in 4' in Paypal. It's not the best user experience, but for 15 minutes work it's OK.

Is this service available for customers in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, and other countries in the Americas, both North and South? It seems that this option is only available in Australia, which is frustrating since none of my customers are there. To be honest, it's infuriating. How hard can it be to offer installment payments to my customers in Latin America?

Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, if anyone can provide a snippet of code to implement and explain how the checkout process can be altered to include installment payments, I would greatly value your help.

Yes, only available to customers in USA, Australia, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy atm (https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Products-Services-Archives/Is-there-a-list-of-countries-where-Pa...). Most 'Buy Now, Pay Later' providers focus their service on certain countries to minimise their risk (eg. Paypal, Afterpay). So, you may need to use a service provider specifically catering to South American customers (maybe Kueski https://www.kueskipay.com/shopify) and integrate that with your site.

Since my post, I have actually removed the code from my Product Page for two reasons. One, it was creating some PageSpeedInsight failures, and performance loss, due to the connection it makes on page load to Paypal API. As a new site with an SEO and social focus to generate traffic, I wasn't prepared to sacrifice the performance, and indirectly, the page ranking loss. Two, as you said, it was only adding limited info to the product page with no change to Checkout, and the customer has the option to choose 'Pay in 4' when they reach Paypal anyway. And I can just add a static image into the Product page template showing Paypal Pay in 4 is available. Code snippet for Checkout I don't have, but if you are going to look at another service provider then the code will be specific to that provider anyway. Hope this helps.
