All things Shopify and commerce
Hello... I have products that all have unique ingredients and when trying to add them it would make them all the same like a default. How can I add the ingredients to my products without this happening?
Hi, @Gabimoore19!
Thanks for reaching out in our Community forums and for sharing your concern, I’d be happy to help.
You mentioned that you are running into issues when adding an ingredients list to each item, as the list appears to be duplicating for all of your products. I'd love to gather more context regarding this so that I can point you in the right direction. Which theme are you using? Are you able to walk me through your workflow that leads to this error? For instance, are you editing the description of your products when adding your lists, or making the changes directly on your themes code?
Looking forward to your response!

Hi Mac,
I am using the Sense Theme. I am trying to add the ingredients and the "How to use" description under products. It does the same thing for any product details I am adding thru the website editor.
Hi again, @Gabimoore19!
Thank you for the clarification.
Editing your ingredients and How to use descriptions tabs is possible by following a few steps. Firstly, you will want to head over to your theme editor and create a template to customize how your content is displayed.
To do this, you will want to head over to one of your product pages, click on Default Product > find Products in the dropdown menu > click Create Template. From there, you can name the template and make any customizations to the Ingredients or How to use sections. After it's published, assign it in the Shopify admin by heading over to the product page and activating the corresponding theme template.
After this is done, you will be able to manage and assign all of your templates to your products, allowing you to have different sections on each page. Feel free to check out our Template guide that goes into more detail.
Kindly reply back to this thread with any questions or updates and we can continue our conversation further!

How do you make the ingredients for each product different?
Hi, @SaliceDolce!
Thank you for joining this thread.
This can be done by creating and assigning unique templates for your products. Essentially, you will want to head over to one of your product pages, click on Default Product > find Products in the dropdown menu > click Create Template. From there, you can name the template and add your list of ingredients. After it's published, assign it in the Shopify admin by heading over to the product page and activating the corresponding theme template.
Feel free to check out our Template guide that goes into more detail on how to assign your templates.
Let me know if this suggestion works for you!

Why doesnt shopify simplify this ingredient listing process? Once I click on a product and edit the ingredients on that products page that should be all I have to do. I shouldnt have to create and template and do all these extra steps. It makes no sense.
I agree! When I add my ingredients, it duplicates all 3 products I have listed. Makes absolutely no sense and has wasted 2 hours of my day trying to figure out why it is doing this.
Hi, @JPR44!
Thanks for joining this thread. I'd be happy to help.
I'm sorry to hear that the process to update your ingredients was time consuming. In order to update each ingredient list seperatly, you will need to create and assign unique product page templates.
To do this, you will navigate to your theme editor, click on the desired product page, and click on Default Product > find Products in the dropdown menu > click Create Template. From there, you can name the template and add your list of ingredients. After it's published, assign it in the Shopify admin by heading over to the product page and activating the corresponding theme template.
Feel free to check out our Template guide that goes into more detail on how to assign your templates.
Let me know if this suggestion works for you!

This is so frustrating and disappointing that 8 months on I am having this exact issue and nothing has been done to simplify the process. I am using the craft theme and it blows my mind that it is this difficult just to change the individual ingredients of products. it has really made me wish I hadn't used Shopify to begin with.
IDK why Shopify is saying what they are. You can do it like this:
To display the ingredients on the site
I hope that helps.
BTW, I have a small agency of web app devs and designers, AND my wife and I operate our own Shopify store. If we can be of help, please just let me know.
@briansage Super easy. I didn't even try the other methods. thanks for the info.
@briansage How could I add some extra info to each ingredient? I would like to add a percentage amount to each ingredient as a separate data, so I can have more flexibility on my template.
That's getting more advanced. For each extra bit of data, you'll need to create a new field, and to display those fields you'll need to customize your theme HTML.
If that's not within your wheelhouse, then you may just consider finding a plugin that handles what you need. Sorry I don't have a better DIY recommendation.
Hi Briansage - I have another layer, I have a client wanting to generate a shopping list. I am thinking of creating a zap that exports the Ingredient and Quantity then create formulas in Google Sheets that will provide the right quanitites for a weekly shoppping list for the chef.
would love more insight on this to see if possbile.
send me an email if you could rob@MaverixDesign.com
Hi - this seems like it will work - but there is only a maximum of 100 characters. Do you know how to increase this?
Under Settings > Custom Data > Products, make sure the type of custom fields is set to "Multi-line text". That should allow 65k characters.
This!!! I don't know why Shopify has not responded with exactly that way. It would cause so much more work. Thank you!! It's exactly what I was looking for. Everyone should do this.
@briansage How do I get ahold of you. I am trying to figure out how to do something very particular. I'm looking for some help. Thanks!
Hi @briansage, Thank you for the tip above. We added the custom metafield in the settings area and a new data block to the Product Default Template. In Row Content for the block settings, we clicked data source, and it had the custom Ingredients metafield, so we selected that. The metafield also exists on the Product Page in Shopify Admin.
But so far, when we add data to the Ingredients metafield on the Product Page in Shopify Admin, it's not showing up when we hit the Ingredients collapsible block. Any thoughts on why? Thanks in advance.
Where do I put the actual ingredients? The description section only allows 100 characters, even though I have the multi line text selected. Also, doing this method creates an ingredients list on all of my listings, and it's the same information.
Please advise
I know this is an old thread but apparently Shopify did not make any updates as I am having the same identical issued the original poster posted. However, I am not seeing the "Product > Default product (or whatever product template you want to change)"
I cannot believe Shopify did not make updates to the template as this does takes a lot of time.
Hi @KeepItSimple22!
Thank you very much for reaching out and joining this thread.
I appreciate you taking the time to outline your feedback. I can definitely see how simplifying the ingredients list process could be beneficial from a practical and time saving perspective. I can definitely pass this feedback along to our theme development team for review. Hopefully, an easier method can be added in the future.
Thanks again!
