I am making gift boxes available for online purchase from my corner store. I want to give customers the option to purchase merchendise (we sell hats and crewnecks) but only as an "add-on" if they are already purchasing a gift box.
What I'm picturing is that the customer goes to the product page (product being "gift box") and once they're in the product page they click something that says "add hat" (hat being another product - but one that isn't stand alone. It is only available within the giftbox product page.) Is this possible?

Thankyou for your wonderful question and yes it is possible to add a gift product on another product page if user selects it.
You can go with a custom product options apps or for one time investment this can hardcoded.

Yes, it is possible to create a gift box product with optional add-ons like hats that are only available when purchasing the gift box. Here's how you can set this up in Shopify:
1. Create your main "Gift Box" product in Shopify. Set up the title, description, images, price, etc.
2. Install a product options app like "Infinite Options"[ or "Product Options & Customizer". These apps allow you to add custom options and add-ons to your products.
3. In the app, add a new option set for your Gift Box product. Create an option called something like "Add a Hat" with a checkbox input type.
4. Configure the option to have an additional cost equal to the price you want to charge for the hat add-on. For example, if the hat is normally $20, set the add-on price to $20.
5. Optionally hide the hat product from your catalog so it can't be purchased individually. You can do this by editing the hat product and unchecking "Online Store" in the sales channels.
6. On your gift box product page, the "Add a Hat" option will now appear, allowing customers to check the box and add the cost of a hat to their gift box purchase. The hat won't be available for purchase on its own.
7. When you receive the order, the order details will indicate whether the "Add a Hat" option was selected, so you know to include a hat in the gift box when fulfilling.
Some key things to keep in mind:
- Make sure to clearly communicate that the hat can only be purchased as a gift box add-on. Consider adding this to the gift box product description.
- If you have multiple hat variants (colors, sizes, etc), you may need to make a unique "Add-on" product for each one. The apps allow multiple options but it can get complex.
- Test the checkout flow to make sure prices are being calculated correctly and the hat isn't available on its own.
Using a product options app is the easiest way to accomplish this. Alternatively, some custom theme development could build a bespoke gift box interface, but that requires more technical work.

Given that the hat isn't available for individual purchase and is only offered as an add-on to the gift box, you can utilize the seo.hidden metafield to hide it from your storefront. This way, it will only appear as an add-on product when customers are selecting their gift box.
