All things Shopify and commerce
I want to remove my domain from an inactive shop. I want to connect the domain to a new Shopify store and also delete the previous store. Thank you for your help.
Hi, @juliahfigueroa.
Thank you for reaching out!
To remove a domain from an inactive store will require you to log into your inactive account to initiate the domain transfer. When you transfer your domain, your DNS records, email forwarding address, and subdomains will transfer along with the domain. To transfer your domain, you need to follow these steps:
After the transfer is accepted, it can take up to 24 hours for the domain transfer to complete. Once the transfer is complete, you can log back into that inactive store and deactivate it. To do this, you need to go to Settings > Plan and click deactivate store in your admin.
Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I'm not able to do as you suggested since my domain is not a "shopify-managed domain". Should I just remove the domain in the 'Domains' section and then add it again in my new store? will this work?
Thank you for your help.
Hi, @juliahfigueroa.
Thank you for that information!
You will need to change the DNS settings on your domain through your third-party host and make sure it is pointing to your new store. Then you will want to go into your inactive store's domain and initiate a domain transfer. You can do this by going to Online Store > Domains in your admin. Once you click on the domain you want to transfer, you will see the transfer domain button on the top right corner.

How can I remove my domain from my inactive Shopify store and transfer it to a new store without choosing a plan on the inactive store where the domain is
Hi, @Kaetti.
Thank you for reaching out!
To transfer out a Shopify domain, you will need to gain access to your store. You can select a plan, transfer out your domain then contact Support for a refund.

Thank you for your response,I have a further question
after I transfer the domain out of the store , how do I this explain to Shopify support in order to be eligible for a refund, because I saw somewhere that they have a no refund policy .
what can I tell them to explain the reason for my refund and how long does it take to get the refund
Hello Emily, thank you so much for your previous response. I was also wondering how long it takes before I can get a refund after I am able to transfer my domain out of my Shopify store . And also how do I explain to Shopify support in order to be eligible for my refund without any issues
Would I be able to transfer the domain out with the Shopify starter plan which is $5/month,does it give me access to the domain
Hi, @Kaetti.
Thank you for your reply!
You can always chat with a Support Advisor and explain what you are going to do and do it while chatting with them so they can issue a refund once you have completed the transfer. The starter plan does not include a web page, so you would not have access to your domains.

Hi! How would this work if I have already deactivated my other Shopify? Can someone at Shopify remove it for me so I can use it on my new store??
Hi, @HalleLaForte.
Thank you for reaching out!
You would need to transfer out your domain before you close your store. If you did not do this then you will need to log into your store, select a plan and transfer out your domain. You can then request a refund from our Support Team.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
