How do I change an order from delivery to pickup?

So I just got my very first order and the placed it under delivery the order wasn’t fulfil yet but they contacted me and told me they want to change it to pickup instead but I have no idea on how to change it on here

First, congratulations on your first order!

I understand your customer wants to change the delivery method on their order to local pickup. Just to confirm, are you looking to remove/refund the shipping fee?

There isn't a way to change the delivery method after the customer has finalized their order. However, if you're communicating with the customer, you can inform them and refund the shipping fee portion of their order. That being said, to also protect yourself from any potential charge disputes, I'd recommend keeping the conversations with your customer to account for the partial refund on their order. 

As another option, you can refund the original order and create a draft order with the changes to their order. Then, you'll be able to send the new invoice to your customer and re-capture the payment. This method is recommended, as it doesn't require referencing separate orders or handling partial refunds.

Hi, I have a customer who has decided they would rather have their order shipped rather than picked up - which is how they processed their order. 

What’s the best way to proceed?

There are a couple of ways you can proceed for changing the fulfillment method on an existing order. However, the best way is to create a separate order using draft orders. The reason for this is because there isn't a direct way to change the fulfillment method that the customers chose when they checked out, so a new order will be required and it will be best to communicate this with your customer.

 

When creating the draft order, you can discount the item by 100% since the customer has already paid for this on their original order. From there, you can fill in their shipping information and, if applicable, add the shipping cost (if applicable). After that, you can proceed with fulfilling the order and purchasing a shipping label if required. You may also need to readjust your inventory levels, as only 1 unit of the item(s) will be fulfilled among the two orders. 

 

The alternate method would be to refund the original order and have the customer place a new order with shipping. However, it's important to note that some payment gateways will charge a fee for processing a refund or they will process the refund minus the credit card processing fee. So depending on the payment gateway you're using, creating a separate draft order may be the best option in many cases.

Thanks, this is what we’ve done. It would however be nice if Shopify would
consider adding the option of changing the fulfillment method within the
order itself.

This is a really clumsy way of changing the deliver to store pickup.

I agree! To have to cancel an order and have a customer pay again is not great customer service. Sometimes I have a customer who forgot to put a discount code in and I'd like to be able to add it in for them before I finalize the transaction (I capture payments manually).

Common let's fix this issue. Make it easy to swap shipping to pick up.

Not having an option to switch delivery method seems to be a easy addition that would help shop owners. The original inquiry was from 3 years ago and does not seem reasonable that no fix has been presented from the development team.

+1 vote on making it easier to change from Shipping to Pick Up, and from Pick-Up to Shipping. Same for Delivery. No brainer to provide customer service with less friction.
